The Philippines established formal relations with Pakistan on
8 September 1949 through the opening of a Philippine Consulate in
Karachi. The mission was elevated to an embassy in Karachi in 1956.
Following Pakistan's relocation of its capital to Islamabad in
the 1960s, the Philippine Embassy transferred its operations to
Islamabad by FY 1973-1974 (as evidenced by the Embassy's Annual Report
for that year). For many years, it operated from rented premises in the
F-7 area of the capital, including House No. 7-A, Kohsar Road, Sector
F-7/2.
In January 2014, the Department of Foreign Affairs initiated
construction of a purpose-built Philippine Embassy complex on Plot Nos.
3-5, Diplomatic Enclave, Sector G-5, a 6,640-m2 site granted on perpetual lease by the Government of
Pakistan. The complex comprises the chancery, Ambassador's Residence,
and community facilities.
The new chancery was formally inaugurated in early July 2016 in the
Diplomatic Enclave, marking the Embassy's move from F-7 to its permanent
home. The Embassy continues to operate at Plot Nos. 3-5, Diplomatic
Enclave, Sector G-5 |

The Philippines and Pakistan maintain friendly, constructive
relations grounded in longstanding treaty ties and regular dialogue. A
foundation stone was laid with the Treaty of Friendship, signed in Washington on
3 January 1951, which affirmed mutual goodwill and cooperation. This was
complemented by a Cultural Agreement signed in Rawalpindi on 15 August 1961, a
Trade Agreement concluded on 29 September 1961, and an Agreement relating to Air
Services that entered into force on 16 July 1949, facilitating civil aviation
links and mobility. In recent years, cooperation broadened with the Memorandum
of Understanding on Defense Cooperation, signed in May 2022 to formalize
channels for exchanges and consultations between the defense establishments.
Bilateral ties are marked by cordiality and respect,
underpinned by shared interests in peace, stability, and inclusive
development. People-to-people links, commercial exchanges, and practical
cooperation, cultural, economic, transport, and defense, contribute to a
steady, forward-looking partnership. Both countries continue to engage
in a spirit of mutual benefit, building on these instruments to support
connectivity, prosperity, and regional stability.
At present, the Philippine Embassy in Islamabad is accredited to the
Islamic Republic of Pakistan and to Afghanistan, and holds consular
jurisdiction only over the Republic of Tajikistan and the Kyrgyz
Republic (Kyrgyzstan) for the delivery of public services-such as
passports, civil registry, notarial services, visas (as applicable), and
assistance-to-nationals. |
