LAHORE, 19-20 November
2025-Ambassador Emmanuel R. Fernandez and his spouse, Mme. Alicia Kalaw-Fernandez,
along with the Philippine Embassy's Vice Consul Rain Mendoza, undertook
a two-day official visit to Lahore, reinforcing the Philippines'
engagement with Punjab provincial authorities, local business and
educational institutions, and the Filipino community in the city. They
were accompanied by the Philippine Honorary Consul for Lahore, Mr. Fahdel Sheikh, and his spouse Mme. Sadia Sheikh; as well as the
Philippine Consul General for Karachi, Dr. Imran Yousuf. On the second day of his official visit, Ambassador Fernandez and his delegation visited Avicenna Medical and Dental College, where college executives, faculty members, and key officials gave a tour of the institution. This was followed by a session on potential collaborations between Philippine and Pakistani institutions in healthcare and education. Key participants included Honorary Consul Fahdel Sheikh (Lahore), Honorary Consul General Dr. Muhammad Imran Yousuf (Karachi), and Dr. Shandana Sheikh, co-chairperson of Avicenna Medical and Dental College and Avicenna Hospital. During the discussions, Ambassador Fernandez underscored Filipinos' natural instinct for caring for others-a competitive advantage that makes them highly valued in fields such as medicine and nursing. He noted similar qualities of warmth and hospitality among Pakistanis, which, when honed, can be developed into a comparable compassionate skill set. Reflecting on the rise of AI in the workforce, he stressed that technology cannot replicate human empathy: "Compassion and care for others remain uniquely human qualities," he said. "By continuing to nurture these skills, we can remain relevant despite the rapid emergence of AI technology that threatens to take away most of the work we currently do as human beings." He reiterated the Embassy's support for emerging partnerships and the exchange of knowledge and best practices between Philippine and Pakistani institutions. |
