FORMER PHILIPPINE PRESIDENT CALLS ON PAKISTAN PRESIDENT ZARDARI

  12 November 2025 | Islamabad:

Former Philippine President and current Member of the House of Representatives Hon. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo paid a courtesy call on President Asif Ali Zardari of Pakistan on 12 November 2025 at Aiwan-e-Sadr. The meeting took place on the sidelines of her participation-on behalf of the Speaker of the House of Representatives-at the Inter-Parliamentary Speakers' Conference held in Islamabad from 10-12 November 2025.

During the meeting, President Zardari extended a warm welcome to Former President Arroyo and underscored the more than seven decades of enduring friendship between the Philippines and Pakistan. He emphasized the wide-ranging character of our bilateral cooperation, spanning political, economic, and defense relations, and described the 2022 Memorandum of Understanding on Defense Cooperation as a milestone in strengthening defense ties.

President Zardari also congratulated the Philippines on its assumption of the ASEAN Chairmanship for 2026, expressing Pakistan's continued appreciation for Manila's support for Islamabad's engagement with ASEAN mechanisms.

He further conveyed his sympathies for the casualties and damage caused by the recent earthquake and typhoons that struck the Philippines, reaffirming Pakistan's solidarity with the Filipino people. He commended the Philippines' leadership in promoting climate resilience, including its active role in the Loss and Damage Fund, and expressed hope for expanded economic cooperation-particularly in the food and pharmaceutical sectors-as well as stronger private-sector collaboration.

On a personal note, President Zardari remarked that eight Filipinas work in his household, praising their industriousness, trustworthiness, professional skills, and amiable personalities. He also recalled having met former Philippine President Fidel V. Ramos and expressed interest in visiting the Philippines in the near future.

Former President Arroyo thanked President Zardari for his warm hospitality and reaffirmed the Philippines' commitment to further strengthen cooperation with Pakistan, particularly in trade, defense, and people-to-people exchanges. She expressed her sympathies for the victims of recent terrorist attacks in Pakistan and recalled the long-standing ties between the two countries, citing the 1959 visit of her father, former President Diosdado Macapagal, as an early milestone in bilateral relations. She also noted Pakistan's important role as a leading voice in the Global South, given its position as the world's fifth most populous nation.

Also present during the courtesy call were Philippine Ambassador to Pakistan, Dr. Emmanuel R. Fernandez, and Pakistan Senate Chairman Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani.
