In a meeting held at the historic
Governor's House in Lahore on September 1, 2025, the Ambassador of the
Republic of the Philippines, H.E. Dr. Emmanuel R. Fernandez, met with
the Governor of Punjab, the Honorable Sardar Saleem Haider Khan, to
discuss avenues for strengthening bilateral cooperation between the
Philippines and the Punjab province of Pakistan.
The ambassador was accompanied by his spouse, Mme. Alicia Kalaw-Fernandez;
the Philippine Honorary Consul General for Karachi, Dr. Imran Yousuf;
and the Philippine Honorary Consul for Lahore Mr. Fahdel Sheikh.
During the meeting, Ambassador Fernandez emphasized the Philippines'
keen interest in deepening ties with the Punjab province in key areas of
mutual interest, including economic cooperation, educational linkages,
cultural exchange, and people-to-people engagement.
As a concrete step in this direction, Ambassador Fernandez announced the
establishment of a "Philippines-Pakistan Growth Window" at GIFT
University, Gujranwala, which will serve as a platform to foster
academic collaboration, innovation exchange, and entrepreneurial
partnerships between institutions and individuals from both sides.
Ambassador Fernandez also expressed the Philippines' strong interest in
exploring joint ventures in trade, particularly in sectors such as
textiles, agriculture, and services, and encouraged bilateral trade
missions and business-to-business interactions to unlock untapped
economic potential.
On the cultural and educational fronts, the Ambassador proposed faculty
and student exchange programs, as well as joint cultural events to build
a greater understanding between the people of Punjab and the
Philippines.
The Ambassador further highlighted the importance of climate resilience
and disaster preparedness, areas where both countries face common
challenges and can benefit from shared experiences and collaboration. He
offered to initiate dialogue between institutions from both sides to
develop joint training programs and policy exchange mechanisms.
Governor Punjab, Sardar Saleem Haider Khan, warmly welcomed the
Ambassador's proposals and reaffirmed Punjab's readiness to collaborate
across all the areas he highlighted. The Governor noted that while
Pakistan contributes minimally to global carbon emissions, it faces
disproportionate impacts of climate change, such as floods and heatwaves,
and welcomed the idea of joint action in climate adaptation strategies.
Governor Khan also spoke about integrating climate resilience modules in
university curricula across Punjab and appreciated the efforts of the
Pakistan People's Party, led by Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, in
initiating impactful flood relief and rehabilitation programs, including
the construction of over 2.1 million houses in Sindh.
The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to deepen cooperation,
build institutional linkages, and expand friendship between the people
of the Philippines and Punjab. |
